Fountain pens, watches, jewelry, apparel, and leather goods are some of the timeless products that have marked Montblanc’s illustrious growth as a manufacturing entity. Established in 1906, it was not until 2011 that the brand released Legend, its debut fragrance.
While perfumery was uncharted territory, Montblanc continued doing what it does best: producing stellar products using the latest technology. In this Montblanc Explorer review, we set our sights on Explorer, an attractive, wearable, and reasonably priced designer fragrance. Is it a worthy addition to your collection?
The Story Behind Montblanc Explorer for Men
Explorer by Montblanc debuted in the perfume world at the beginning of 2019. The story behind this cologne is one of adventure, exploration, and a pursuit of excellence under one’s own terms.
Montblanc Explorer captures a journey across distant lands in search of exotic ingredients. The distinctive woody aromatic fragrance contains leather, French sage, Italian bergamot, Indonesian patchouli leaf, and Haitian vetiver.
Produced under the highest standards using modern methods and a high level of craftsmanship, Explorer by Montblanc is the work of three noses. These are Olivier Pescheux (he has created scents for Dior, Armani, and Paco Rabanne, among others), Jórdi Fernandez, and Antoine Maisondieu. Each contributed something personal and unique pertaining to a specific ingredient.
Our Verdict of Montblanc Explorer
Explorer cologne comes in a cool, ultra-modern flacon covered in a leathery protective sleeve. Its elegant lines are unabashedly masculine, while the leathery covering looks and feels luxurious. Towards the bottom is an iconic emblem in the shape of a star.
The Saffiano leather motif appears on all Montblanc offerings, while the iconic star symbolizes the six glaciers found atop Europe’s loftiest mountains. As for the Montblanc logo, you will find it on the bottle, its bottom, the cap, and the atomizer.
Capping the minimalist-looking flacon is a black cap reminiscent of a car nut. The bottle bears an elongated shape, with dark leather contrasting sharply with the bottom of the glass.
This Eau de Parfum is available in 1.01, 2.03, and 3.38-ounce (30, 60, and 100 ml) sizes. It’s readily accessible, and you will find it in your local perfumery, the Montblanc website, or reputable online stores like Nordstrom.
Montblanc Explorer greets you with an assortment of flavors, mainly citrus, and spice. Zesty bergamot, pink pepper, and clary sage make for a fresh and sparkly opening. The beginning is slightly sharp, though not overwhelmingly so.
A short while later, smooth leathery accords enter the mix enriched by earthy and woody vetiver, sandalwood, and ambroxan. The drydown shines with woody tones and chocolate essences from the cacao pod.
This is a simple fragrance with a seamless progression. While its composition is not groundbreaking per se, the overall effect is super likable.
Interestingly, according to some Montblanc Explorer reviews, the cologne’s attractive aroma bears a slight resemblance to Creed’s Aventus, particularly at the onset. (They share the same woody citrusy scent albeit from different fruits, although Aventus is deeper, sharper, and smokier). That said, Montblanc Explorer is a unique scent in its own right with a distinctive aroma.
Explorer by Montblanc performs quite well, giving you up to 8 hours of solid wear. We rate the performance above average with a powerful sillage at the start (the first hour or so). After that, the cologne settles into a skin scent, though still noticeable in close proximity.
If you like intimate scents, you’ll love this one for sure. Moreover, because it’s inoffensive, you won’t offend anyone even if you happen to over-apply your cologne. Don’t waste your cologne, though. If you are unsure how much is enough, get some helpful tips from our article on how many sprays you should use.
Explorer suits adventurous men with carefree spirits. As such, it makes a perfect hiking companion. A versatile fragrance, it works for both youthful and more mature gents, more so because it sports the perfect balance between fruity, spicy, and earthy.
Seasonally, the cologne is more suited to the warm temperatures of spring, summer, and fall. You can wear it casually both day and night. It’s also appropriate for work, dates when going out with friends, or occasions where you don’t want to stand out but don’t want to be loud.
Explorer’s combination of bergamot, leather, and cacao is super appealing. Sexy, manly, and classy come to mind when we think of words to describe the fragrance. And to crown it all, Montblanc Explorer smells really good. It’s such a delightful scent that’s sure to add a spring to your steps whenever you are out and about.
The adventure-inspired composition reminds one of the crisp, fresh air abundant in lofty mountain peaks. It is rugged yet feels almost natural while eliciting a feeling of comfort and relaxation. This quality probably comes from pomarose, an odorant with delicate fruity-rosy nuances.
Montblanc Explorer is an Eau de Parfum, and its undeniably good performance reflects this. The cologne comes with a deodorant stick which you can use to take the longevity up a notch.
