Ever since Nina Ricci opened shop in 1932, their fragrances have focused on one thing; celebrating women. Brimming with joy, optimism, and irrepressible joie de vivre, these scents have endeared themselves to females through the decades.

In today’s review, we travel back to an iconic scent, L’Aire du Temps perfume, to establish whether this retro number is worth a spot in your dresser. Hop on board!

What’s the Story Behind L’Air Du Temps Perfume?

Maria “Nina” Ricci and her son Robert Ricci established their fashion house in France. The iconic House of Nina Ricci stocked feminine scents, each designed to bathe the senses in a sea of floral and sensual bliss.

Nina Ricci released the iconic Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps following the end of WW2 in 1948. This period witnessed a rise in femininity as women moved into employment and men joined the war effort. Consequently, the fragrance epitomized the hope, optimism, and elation experienced during this period. Francis Fabron, the perfumer, created this masterpiece to symbolize love, peace, and freedom.

This classic composition proudly holds the coveted position of being the world’s first spicy-floral perfume. The radiant fragrance is an invitation to “enthrall your senses with a warm, sensory scent that emanates all day.”

And speaking of classics, Clarice Starling (the heroine) wore this in Silence of the Lambs, the electrifying blockbuster movie (1991) starring Antony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter).

L’Air du Temps collection comprises 3 iconic scents:

  • L’Air du Temps Eau de Toilette
  • L’Air du Temps Eau de Parfum
  • L’Air du Temps X Antoinette Poisson EDT

This L’ Air du Temps review covers the EDP.

L’Air du Temps is an elegant floral bouquet containing carnations, roses, and jasmine laced with an assortment of spices, all underlain with a woody base of cedars and musks. In Robert’s words, “a true olfactory miracle.”

This gem unfurls with a spicy-floral combo featuring luminous Italian bergamot and pink carnation. The heart blossoms with a soft, sweet rose enriched with warmly alluring jasmine, while the base comprising sandalwood, amber, iris, and musk completes this timeless and sensual Eau de Parfum. (We love jasmine. Click here to see our top jasmine scents).

Here, we have a lively, fresh bergamot opening before the spicy carnation and clove join in. The carnation’s floral-spicy accents form L’Air Du Temps’ DNA, with notes from bergamot and rosewood playing a supporting role. As the fragrance continues to evolve, jasmine and rose are on hand to provide further refinement, while iris and violet offer a powdery vibe.

As the fragrance dries down, you will likely get strong hints of a soapy quality (the fancy type) emanating from the white blooms. But rest assured, it comes in the nicest, cleanest, and most elegant way.

Versatility

4.5

Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps comes highly recommended for casual wear. However, it’s endowed with enough class and elegance to suit any event or formal occasion. Thus, you will fit right in if you wear it for an evening out, to a dinner, or concert.

The perfume is also flirty and demure in equal measure and is the perfect scent to compliment a special date.

Climate-wise, the spicy vibe and warm amber go nicely with winter, but the floral bouquet shines best in summer.

This fragrant ode to joy inspires a feeling of positivity which means it can be your go-to scent whenever you want to uplift your spirits – or are in need of some pampering.

L’ Air du Temps is a beautiful, light, powdery, floral scent with spicy undertones. The easy-to-wear fragrance may have been launched decades ago, but this is no old ladies perfume. It is not dated at all. On the contrary, this remains one of the most incredible scents ever formulated.

Granted, it might remind you of your beloved granny or a favorite aunt. But think of how positive this is. Not only is it comforting, reassuring, and evocative, but it is also a reminder of one of the primary reasons we adore scents.
