The Story Behind Green Irish Tweed Creed

Olivier Creed partnered with Pierre Bourdon to create Green Irish Tweed, releasing the male fragrance in 1985. An instant hit, the cologne catapulted the perfumery house into the limelight and remains a must-have for Creed fans and followers.

The fresh aromatic fragrance evokes the experience of an elegant “walk through the Irish countryside” or horse riding through expansive estates in the Emerald Isle.

But more than that, Green Irish Tweed captures Creed’s family heritage in high couture. The use of the finest tweed fabrics for Creed’s distinguished clientele is captured in the cologne’s rich atmospheric green accords. As a result, wearing Green Irish Tweed is like wearing a “nineteenth-century gentleman’s country tweed.” In other words, a perfectly tailored suit.

One thing that distinguishes the House of Creed from other brands is its use of fine, hand-picked ingredients. This factor makes Creed Green Irish Tweed a fragrance for discerning men who like to wear colognes made to the highest standards.

Scent

4.6

Creed Green Irish Tweed smells fresh, clean, earthy, and slightly spicy. Thanks to the enchanting blend of minimalistic, natural components, it has a natural aroma that feels classy, highly sophisticated, and effortlessly masculine.

Like most Creed Scents, this is not a complex formulation featuring multiple notes. Yet, Green Irish Tweed is extremely well-blended.

The fragrance opens beautifully with a refreshing burst of fresh, clean, and green notes interlaced with hints of spice. Lemon, verbena, and peppermint constitute the top notes, with a compelling violet leaf as the sole mid-note. Meantime, powdery Florentine iris, musky ambergris, and Mysore sandalwood bring up the rear, forming the base notes.

The opening is zesty and invigorating, while the core is grassy. At the base, an enduring layer of distinctive woods and ambergris, Creed’s signature note, bring the nostalgic fragrance to a finish while traces of violet lurk in the background. Meanwhile, the iris-violet duo truly brings out the countryside vibe while sandalwood tones down the grassy effect into something smooth and woodsy.

(Ambergris is ubiquitous in Creed fragrances and is partly what makes them so exorbitant. For more on this, check out this post: Why Is Creed Cologne So Expensive?)

Celebrities adore green Irish Tweed for a reason. For starters, the beautiful cologne is prestigious and one of Creed’s signature scents (Creed is a luxe perfume house catering to the rich, wealthy, and famous). Secondly, it takes an unusual twist on a classic, resulting in a rich, fresh, long-lasting, aromatic scent that’s downright addictive.

And while it was made decades ago, it’s not dated. On the contrary, it smells incredible and is one of the best male scents in the market.

Fun Fact: George Clooney, Richard Gere, Russel Crowe, and Prince Charles are some of the celebrities who wear Green Irish Tweed Creed.

This is a long-lasting cologne. On average, you can expect around 10 hours of longevity with solid projection in the initial 2-3 hours. This could extend to even 12 hours under the right conditions. The sillage is moderate, which is about right for a daytime fragrance.

Overall, performance is well-balanced – neither too strong nor weak – plus you’ll get optimal performance with a mere 2-3 sprays.

Versatility

Green Irish Tweed is the perfect go-to spring scent. It shines best in warm temperatures (60 -70 degrees Fahrenheit or 15-20 degrees Celsius), but high heat may cause the freshness to turn slightly sweet, altering the aroma somewhat.

This fragrance will complement your personality if you are cool, laid back, confident, and charismatic. It’s lightweight, easy to wear, and its distinctive aroma is terrific. No wonder it is so popular.

Occasion-wise, you can wear this cologne formally or informally – during the daytime, at work, on a picnic, date, or when hanging out. It fits pretty much everywhere, and almost everyone can pull off wearing Green Irish Tweed since it’s not complicated.

Overall

Green Irish Tweed is a safe fragrance that won’t irritate people around you, even at close quarters. Consequently, you can make this your daily scent – what you reach out for whenever you want to feel clean, fresh, and masculine.

The question, however, is whether it is worth spending $400+ on this fragrance.

If you are a gentleman of means and don’t mind the splurge, the answer is most certainly! In any case, this cologne is a classic, and this is Creed Boutique we are talking of, a luxury brand synonymous with excellence and high-standard workmanship.

That said, several other fragrances fall in the same category but with a more affordable price tag.

Pro Tip: Cool Water Eau de Toilette, a popular aquatic fragrance, makes a passing resemblance to Creed Green Irish Tweed. Interestingly, the two colognes share the same nose (the legendary Pierre Bourdon). The notes and quality differ, but Cool Waters is more affordable.

Top Notes: Lemon, Verbena, Iris, Peppermint

Middle Notes: Violet leaf

Base Notes: Ambergris, Sandalwood

Pros

  • Unforgettable scent
  • A unique mix of nostalgia and modernity
  • A safe blind buy

Cons

  • Exorbitant
  • Not for gentlemen who dig ultra-strong scents
